When a fee is coming up

                        • Ask for a retention offer. Call before or right after the fee posts and ask what they can do to keep you.
                        • Downgrade to a no-fee card. Same issuer, no annual fee, and the account history stays.
                        • Cancel within the refund window. Often about 30 days after the fee posts. Policies vary by issuer.
